    Description

Offered in this 7-day auction is a c.1860 "Knapsack" Vesta.  Sold by sutlers and general stores, these were manufactured by several English and German companies and imported for sale.  This one is made by Bryant & May Limited as seen on the hinged cover.  Popular with soldiers, the vesta held matches on the inside and has a striker on the underside.  Good overall condition exhibiting wear from age and use. There is a great reference for these in Dr. Francis Lord’s, Civil War Collector’s Encyclopedia, Volume IV, page 115.
    Measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/4" x 1/2"
