Description
It's not often that one comes around an original Civil War large item like this. A mainstay of both Federal and Confederate troops this type of knapsack was tarred over leather. Not many survived the years. This one has. I purchased this one over 40years ago from one of the best known gentleman in the Civil War auction businesses. He was also one of the most respected collectors . Mr. Norm Flayderman.you can find many of his collection in the Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia by Francis Lord.Mr. Flayderman provided the providence of the item though obtaining it from the original owner. He did question the unit identification on the back. When I asked for more information on it he replied that it was repainted by the owner after the war and that is why it looks in a better overall condition then the rest of the similar type.
The knapsack has been kept wrapped up all these years. It is not pristine but would make a great display in a shadow box with a canteen and kepi. Just a thought. Items like is can only become more valuable to the historian or museum. What you see is what you get. Please look closely at the photos as they show the condition better than words can.
Good luck in bidding..
